It seems as though most people have heard of P90X and seen the infomercials and ads. If you haven’t given it a go yet you might be wondering what the fuss is about.

After having two children and moving to a situation that had none of the sports that I had always done, like surfing and windsurfing, I knew I needed to do something intense to get in shape. I had never heard of Tony Horton or Beachbody because I had never had an interest in video workouts, especially being from Maui where you spend so much time outdoors.  I needed something more athletic and challenging. Then I saw one of those P90X commercials.

What’s P90X all about? Muscle Confusion. By providing tons of different moves  and exercises, your body is continually challenged. The more you confuse the muscle, the harder your body has to work to keep up; the more variety you put into your workout, the better and faster your results will be.

Here’s Beachbody’s description of each workout on each disc:

•01 Chest & Back. Targeted strength and definition workout emphasizes two classic upper-body exercises.

•02 Plyometrics. Explosive jumping cardio routine, proven to dramatically improve athletic performance.

•03  Shoulders & Arms. A potent combination of pressing, curling, and fly movements that will leave you stronger and more defined.

04 Yoga X. Combines strength, balance, flexibility, and breath work to enhance your physique and calm your mind.

•05  Legs & Back. Squat, lunge, and pull in a total-body workout like no other.

•06  Kenpo X. Intense cardiovascular workout includes punching and kicking for endurance, balance, and coordination.

•07  X Stretch. Achieve a higher level of athleticism, prevent injuries, and avoid plateaus.

•08 Core Synergistics. Build and support the core while conditioning your body.

•09  Chest, Shoulders & Triceps. Targeted strength and definition workout emphasizing two classic upper-body exercises.

•10 Back & Biceps. Flex your powerful biceps, and focus on toning and tightening those showcase upper-body muscles.

•11 Cardio X. Low-impact, fat-burning cardio routine.

•12 Ab Ripper X. Sculpt an incredible six-pack and improve your physical performance.

In the almost two years that I’ve been doing P90X, I have never felt that I had reached a point where the workouts were no longer a challenge. I’ve gotten better at the exercises, and increased the number of repetitions or weight, but as far I can see it would be almost impossible to reach a plateau because of the variety.

They were thinking ahead when they created the videos and knew over time a person can only listen to the same audio for so long. You have a choice to be able to pick silent mode, only music, and music and cues. At first you can’t get enough of all the tips and instructions Tony gives, but there are days I like to use my own music and that helps to keep it fresh for me.

I also take them on my travels. You can use bands if you choose instead of weights, which they demonstrate on the video. You really can use them anywhere. I love having them available at all times to be able to throw in a workout rain or shine.

I have permanently made P90X part of my lifestyle and now make hybrid workouts incorporating other forms of fitness when I don’t want to stick to the 90 day routine. The options with these DVD’s are endless.

I wrote a blog post in mid-January called Exploring Beyond the Gym and ever since writing that post, I’ve been working on tracking down the best people in the New Orleans area to give more information about each different options.

I came across Kerrie Ann Frey on Twitter.  Kerrie Ann Frey is the founder and owner of Fit Mom USA, a former stroller exercise-based program that has evolved in to an online presence with fitness, wellness, and nutrition information for all men and women.

Kerrie Ann completed a full Pilates apparatus year-long program requiring 600 hours of study, training and apprenticeship in Louisiana. She is West Coast Pilates certified and trains clients in several studios in the New Orleans area. She loves to dispel the myth that Pilates is just for stretching.

Pilates Explained by Kerrie Ann Frey

Pilates simply is an innovative system of mind-body exercise evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates.  Pilates is designed to dramatically transform the way your body looks, feels and performs. It is not a secret sequence of movements only dancers or the elite athletes can do.  It’s not only for “this” type of body or “that” type of person.  Simply, it is a way of executing exercises to build strength, good posture and body awareness with flexibility and agility as well.  Once the basic tenets of Pilates are practiced and ingrained, they then can be brought in to more “gym-style” workouts or even tennis games or even daily movements like carrying children.

Movements are completed with attention paid to the breath, the core and the body as a whole.  When you do Pilates exercises, you are conditioning your body to be strong and flexible as a whole unit, without stress on the joints.  Pilates can be done for core strength, injury prevention, enhanced sports performance, and general good health.  You’ll also be training your balance, coordination and control as lagniappe.  Safe, effective exercises are performed either on the mat or on Pilates equipment, or apparatus, such as the Reformer, Wunda Chair, Cadillac, Spine Corrector and others.

Pilates may be performed by nearly everyone with the help of an experience, qualified trainer.  A good trainer will be fully certified, be able to help you engage both your body and your mind during a session and to safely design a program best suited for your needs.  It is an exercise program that can last a lifetime.

Core or “The Powerhouse”

What is the core?  The core, or powerhouse as some refer to it, is the body’s center.  It is the entire abdomen, the back, the glutes and inner and outer thighs.  Try thinking of the core as the body’s engine – once the core is strong and “turned on”, the rest of the body can move fluidly with ease.

One of our primary goals at Be Fit NOLA is to bring out to the forefront the many health and fitness activities, events and opportunities that exist in New Orleans that both locals and tourists simply don’t know about.  I’m willing to bet that one area of health and fitness many folks don’t know about are all the various sport organizations that exist and participate in league events.  Did you know that New Orleans has a Rugby Team? We connected the Captain of the New Orleans Rugby Football Club, Matt Upton, and asked him a few questions in order to find out more about them.

Interview with Team Captain Matt Upton

A few basics first. We practice twice a week in Lakeview and hold our home games in Gretna. The team also owns its own bar, the Rugby Pub in Gretna, right near the home pitch. We play a spring season building up to regional and national playoffs, and a fall season that is a little more casual.

The team stays active year-round with different types of competition and fitness opportunities.

Q: What is the history behind the New Orleans Rugby Football Club? (When did it get started…who started the Club? How was the original team brought together?)

Matt Upton (Captain New Orleans Rugby Football Club):

Our team’s roots go back to 1973. It was formed by a group of local guys who had experience playing rugby in college and wanted to create a next level opportunity to help build the sport here.

What we’re seeing now is a deepening pipeline of players coming out of rugby families, in much the same way as you saw soccer develop in America a generation ago. Some of our past and current players have been instrumental in starting local high school rugby programs. When kids start playing as teens, then continue through college, they can have tremendous skills and experience by the time they’re ready to join the NORFC.

Q: What League is the New Orleans Rugby Football Club member of? What teams do you play against?

Matt Upton:

NORFC is part of USA Rugby, the national league for this level of play. The league is divided into regional divisions and ours is called the Deep South Division. During our spring season, we compete against teams in Baton Rouge, Jackson, Miss., Mobile, Ala., Little Rock, Ark., and Memphis, Tenn. We travel to them, and they come here to play at our home pitch in Gretna. If we do well against our regular season divisional competition, we can advance to the regional playoffs and eventually to the nationals. In recent seasons, we’ve made it to the national “sweet 16″ round of playoffs, competing against America’s best teams in our division.

Apart from these league games (or what we call “matrix games”) we also play a lot of games against teams from across the country and around the world. Not surprisingly, it turns out a lot of teams want to schedule visits to New Orleans. These non-matrix games don’t count for our league record or playoff standings, and we mostly hold these in the fall season. They’re a great chance to get more game experience with different levels of competition.

Q: What is most unique about the sport of Rugby? And how grueling of a sport is Rugby?

Matt Upton:

It’s a rough sport, no doubt about it. Guys take some pretty hard hits, and it’s relentless. Frankly, that’s part of the appeal. It’s extreme. It pushes you to a level you normally don’t ever need to reach. It’s that combination of full contact, no pads, no blocking and 80 minutes games of continuous action. But probably the biggest thing that sets rugby apart is the global community. There’s a very strong, very important social aspect to the sport, within the team and between teams. After games, win or lose, the home team always throws a party for the visitor. It’s the world’s largest fraternity in a way, but the membership requirements are heart and dedication to the sport.

Q: Do players interested in playing need prior experience? Special equipment? Should a player expect to travel with the team often?

Matt Upton:

We’re always recruiting new players, and no prior experience is necessary. That’s part of the beauty of the sport, at least in America. While we are seeing things start to change a bit thanks to new high school programs, most people have not been playing rugby all their lives in this country. There’s not a huge disadvantage here to starting in your 20s or 30s.

Also, there’s no real heavy equipment requirement. Basically, all you need is a mouthpiece, cleats and your jersey.

As for traveling, we do have road games around the Deep South and beyond, so there’s a travel opportunity there for guys who want it.

Q: What brings players out to play? Why do you play?

Matt Upton:

We have guys come out who used to play football and miss that contact. Heard about it in college, thought they’d give it a shot and want to get in shape. Less expensive and more fun than joining a gym. See us out at bars together, see the camaraderie. So there’s the competitive thing, the fitness thing and also that social aspect.

Now why I play is basically because I love the sport and always want to get better at it. I’ve taken time off before, played other sports, did wrestling in college, but I always missed rugby and came back to it. There’s just nothing like it.

Q: If someone is looking for a team sport and has never played Rugby; what do you want to tell them as to why they should try Rugby?

Matt Upton:

It’s like no other sport they’ve played before, and while it’s not for everyone the people who connect with it usually stay involved in the rugby community for a long time. There are guys involved in our club who are still in college and guys who have been playing for more than 30 years. You plug into this diverse network of people who all share a love of this sport.

To find out more information about the New Orleans Rugby Football Club be sure to check-out their website and you can also find them on Facebook. We’ll see you at some of their games!!

One of the first thing I do (almost every morning) is meditate – anywhere from 20 – 60 minutes. I’ve been doing this for years…when I don’t, I find myself more stressed and less focused.  I never go more than a few days without meditating because although the immediate effects of not meditating for me are feeling more stressed and less focused; there are many other health benefits associated to daily meditation.  Meditation is as important to living a healthy lifestyle as eating a healthy and balanced diet and getting regular exercise.

Over the last decade people of all backgrounds have realized the importance and health benefits of meditation but people have also come to find out how difficult it actually is!!

Have you ever been able to completely quiet your mind for 20 minutes? Here is some incentive to try it/try harder.

The Benefits of Meditation (Source HealthandYoga.com)

Though meditation is usually recognized as a largely spiritual practice, it also has many health benefits. The yoga and meditation techniques are being implemented in management of life threatening diseases; in transformation of molecular and genetic structure; in reversal of mental illnesses, in accelerated learning programs, in perceptions and communications beyond the physical, in solving problems and atomic and nuclear physics; in gaining better ecological understanding; in management of lifestyle and future world problems.

  • Increases exercise tolerance in heart patients
  • Leads to a deeper level of relaxation
  • Good for people with high blood pressure as it brings the B.P. to normal
  • Reduces anxiety attacks by lowering the levels of blood lactate
  • Decreases muscle tension (any pain due to tension) and headaches
  • It increases serotonin production which influences mood and behavior. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, obesity, insomnia and headaches
  • Helps in chronic diseases like allergies , arthritis etc
  • Reduces Pre- menstrual Syndrome
  • Enhances the immune system. Research has revealed that meditation increases activity of ‘natural-killer cells’, which kill bacteria and cancer cells
  • Also reduces activity of viruses and emotional distress

No_food_on_PlateThis blog post has been inspired by @Shercole – from our conversation this morning on Twitter.

My parents got divorced when I was 6 years old; shortly after the divorce I went to live with my dad and stepmother. My stepmother was a size 2. As for me, I was kinda of chunky kid and continued to be chunky as a young teenager.

I developed body image issues at a very early age.  I started running around the block when I was about 8 years old; I was running a few miles a day before I reached junior high.  One summer (I think I was 13), I not only ran but did all sorts of aerobic tapes; remember the Cindy Crawford workouts?? I also didn’t eat much at all that summer.  I would skip meals and drink fruity drinks for energy.  I lost a lot of weight that summer but I also put it back on in no time at all.  For the next three year, I yo-yo dieted.

I wasn’t happy with who I was. All I did was compare myself to others. My step mother would ground me for skipping meals because she knew I was developing an eating disorder…however, she never got me any help or education on how to be healthy.  This was in the mid-eighties, when although, eating disorders were acknowledged – they were not talked about the way they have in the last decade nor was information readily available to learn how to be healthy, lose weight and how to develop self-confidence and a good self-image.

The gym and weight room came to my rescue.  I enlisted in the Marine Corps my junior year in High School – I was 16.  I knew to be ready to ship out to Boot Camp I needed to be in excellent shape so I decided to join the local gym – I partnered up with two of the football players from my High School and began my journey in learning everything about lifting weights.  With learning how to lift weight came learning about proper nutrition on how to build lean muscle mass – I was an avid reader of Muscle and Fitness Magazine.

As I developed lean muscle mass – I lost inches and started to have a nice physique and very nice biceps.  I acknowledged that I would never be a size 2; however, I could be lean, strong and beautiful in my own way.  Instead of fitting a mold that others expected of me – I decided who I was and what made me happy.

Now, at 32, after many years spent in the gym…I’m looking for some new ways to get, be and stay lean. Thankfully, New Orleans has a lot to offer – I’ll talk about that in my next blog post: Exploring Beyond the Gym.

It wouldn’t be the end of the year and the start of the New Year without the ingenious Top Ten lists. It’s happening all around us…people and organizations are putting together and revealing their Top Ten lists as the close of 2009 is fast approaching.  We’re not only closing the book on a year but on an entire decade and welcoming the start of a new decade.

We’ve searched the web and compiled a list of the best 5 health and fitness top ten lists.  For each list we picked one item – to read more about each list just click on the headline.

Time Magazine Top Ten 2009 Medical Breakthroughs

#2 – AIDS Vaccine In a field that has seen more failure than success, experts received the news of an effective new AIDS vaccine with a fair share of skepticism. In September, a $105 million trial of a novel combination of two older vaccines was the first to show protection against HIV infection. The results of the trial, which involved more than 16,000 volunteers, suggested that the vaccine was 31% effective at preventing infection among those who were inoculated.

The top health stories of 2009, from the Harvard Health Letter

H1N1_Flu_Vaccine#1 – H1N1 flu: Most of the news about this year’s H1N1 “swine flu” pandemic has been reassuring. While the H1N1 virus spreads easily and makes people sick, so far it’s rarely life-threatening. A major reason for the calm has been the measured public health response. Plenty of information has been made available, and health officials gave us simple, concrete things to do to protect ourselves. A vaccine was developed and put into production, although shortages are a serious concern. We have months of flu season ahead of us and much could go wrong, but early indications show that this pandemic will stay manageable.

CNN Top 10 health innovations of 2009

#7 – Antimicrobial Paint: Your wall paint could protect you from dangerous bacteria, according to scientists at the University of South Dakota.  They have invented a germ-killing molecule that can be added to pain and cloth to give in antimicrobial properties.  The bleach-like substance called N-halamine CI-TMPM would be able to fight hospitals’ “superbugs,” said to kill an estimated 88,000 people each year in the U.S. alone. The antimicrobial substance would last over one year, but would need to be cleaned every one to two weeks. The lead researcher, Dr. Yuyu San, is now in talks with commercial paint brands for partnerships.

ACSM Survey Predicts 2010 Fitness Trends

# 10 – Group personal training: Perhaps the most surprising top-10 trend of the survey, group personal training involves small groups, in lieu of one-on-one instruction. The trend may reflect economic difficulties and makes financial sense for both the client and the trainer.

ACE Top Ten Fitness Trends for 2010

Exergaming Yoga#4 – Exergaming: Exergames will continue to climb in popularity and be taken to the next level: fitness clubs. By integrating fitness-based video games into their programming, clubs will offer unique exercise sessions for game-lovers and those looking for variety within their workouts.  Studies conducted by ACE on exergaming-type systems, including Nintendo’s Wii Sports and Wii Fit and the PC-based Dancetown, offer insight into the true fitness benefits associated with these alternative fitness options.

New_Orleans_Boot_CampWhen we started looking for who was who in the New Orleans Fitness scene, it became apparent that Jonas Deffes has done a lot to help people, particularly women, lead healthier lifestyles in New Orleans.  He is a NESTA (National Exercise and Sports Trainer Association) Certified Adventure Boot Camp Instructor/Owner and a Certified Personal Trainer.  He runs New Orleans Boot Camp.  Read all about Jonas and Nola Boot Camp in my interview with him.  Also, we invited Jonas to blog for Be Fit NOLA and he made us happy by accepting – do stay tune to read his insights in the New Year.

Q. How did you get your start in the fitness/boot camp industry?

Jonas Deffes: In 2003, I opened my first pain clinic in New Orleans to help people with chronic and acute pain from sports and fitness injuries. I quickly found out that people had a further need to get in shape after they were pain free.  However, my pain clinics were destroyed by hurricane Katrina; thus, I began my personal training business   www.NolaTrainer.com .  I quickly became the “go to” trainer in New Orleans for getting in shape quick.  Within 3 months of starting my Personal Training business, I found myself with my schedule maxed out with over 40 personal training clients but I wanted to help more people with my training and nutritional methods.  So, in early 2007, I began my New Orleans Boot Camp for women www.NolaBootCamp.com , which allowed me to train and help more people. Since then, I have become the fitness Boot Camp Authority in New Orleans, which has helped thousands of women in New Orleans, Metairie, and Mandeville .

Q. What is Nola Boot Camp?

Jonas Deffes: New Orleans Boot Camp is a four week New Orleans personal training program for women that offers fitness instruction, nutritional counseling and motivational training – packed with fun and energizing activities designed to help you reach your fitness goals. Whether you want to lose weight to fit into that special dress, shed the extra pounds from a pregnancy or just get fit before that special occasion, this is the program for you!

Nola Boot Camp with Jonas Deffes

Q. How long have you been running Nola Boot Camp?

Jonas Deffes: Officially started in 2007 with one location in Uptown New Orleans. Now we have active 4 locations and more on the way!

Q. Where and when do you hold boot camp sessions?

Jonas Deffes: All of out boot camps are held at 5:30am-6:30am Monday – Friday.
Our four locations are throughout the city.

-Audubon Park in New Orleans

-Saint Dominic’s School and Church in Lake view

-John Curtis Christian School in Metairie

-Trail Head in Mandeville.

Q. What makes the boot camp program different from having a workout at the gym?

Jonas Deffes: The main difference is that our boot camps are done outside.  We focus on utilizing green spaces, which allows for a completely different environmental aspect when working out.  There is nothing more energizing then seeing the sun rise every morning. It seriously is the Best way to start the day.
Also, we also have a free private online community for each member to join which offers support and guidance throughout the program.  Each boot camper also gets a shirt and nutritional guide to help then turbo charge their results and experience.

Push-up Hand Clap

Q. Will I enjoy myself?

Jonas Deffes: You most definitely will enjoy yourself! We strive to make each and every workout different, challenging, fun, and motivating for all ages and fitness levels. Also, we are the ONLY Boot Camp that has official Certified Boot Camp instructors in New Orleans, which insures that you are getting quality and value within our program. I guarantee that you will leave each workout with a huge smile on your face and feeling like a million bucks!

Q. What is the best success story from someone who joined Nola Boot Camp?

Jonas Deffes: I have had so many success story’s, my website is literally covered with amazing video testimonials. However, one that particularly stands out is a woman named Jill who started boot camp with literally a zero fitness level.

I remember her at boot camp evaluation; she had told me that she had a goal to climb Mount Kilimanjaro! Seeing that she was about 25 pounds over weight, I knew she had a Huge challenge ahead of her. However, within three months on our program she had stayed the course and lost over 25 pounds and inches everywhere, then went off and climbed Kilimanjaro!

Mitchupitchu
She isn’t stopping there either her next goal is climbing 4 days up to Machu Picchu, and the following year a 25 day hike in Nepal to Mt. Everest base camp.

Q. Can I gift Nola Boot Camp to someone for Christmas?

Jonas Deffes: Yes, we have gift certificates available…the gift of health and fitness has to be one of the best stocking stuffers someone can get.

Q. What would you tell someone who is hesitating to try this out?

Jonas Deffes: In today’s age, I feel that Social proof that a program can deliver results is the most important deciding factor of someone on the fence.  I have Dozens of video success stories from women of all shapes, sizes, fitness levels, and ages displayed on my website http://www.NolaBootcamp.com proving over and over again that we have a unique system that works for everyone.
